Advantages & Disadvantages of Wiring Standards T568A & T568B

The two most common wiring standards used in structured cabling systems are T568A and T568B. The two standards are similar, however, there are some differences in the data transmission characteristics between them. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages that should be taken into consideration when designing a structured cabling system. In this article, we will compare the advantages and disadvantages of T568A and T568B and help you understand which one is best suited for your given network requirements.

What Are Wiring Standards T568A & T568B?

T568A and T568B are two standards used in structured cabling systems for connecting Ethernet cables. Both standards use eight wires in an RJ45 connector to enable communication between network devices. T568A and T568B differ from each other in their wiring sequence and color code. While T568A begins with a white/green pair, followed by green, orange, blue, white/orange, orange, blue and white/brown pairs, T568B starts with a white/orange pair, followed by orange, white/green, blue, white/blue, green, white/brown and brown pairs.

Advantages of T568A & T568B

One of the advantages of T568A and T568B is that they enable backward compatibility. This means that both ends of a cable can be connected using either standard; a T568A connection on one end of a cable will recognize and work with a T568B connection on the other end of the same cable. Furthermore, both standards allow up to 100Mbps data transmission rate or one gigabit per second (1000 Mbps) which is more than enough for any small to medium-sized business.

Another great advantage of T568A and T568B is that they provide flexibility in terms of installation. As there are 8 wires in an RJ45 connector, it allows for a variety of different configurations. This makes it suitable for different network topologies, including star, hub-and-spoke, tree, and ring structures.

Disadvantages of T568A & T568B

Despite the advantages of T568A and T568B, there are some disadvantages to consider. One problem associated with these wiring standards is potential signal interference. When two devices are connected using T568A and T568B, certain signals may be crossed or mismatched, resulting in noise and degraded performance. In addition, if a device is connected with the wrong wiring standard, it may not work at all.

Another major disadvantage of T568A and T568B is that they are not well-suited for the emerging technologies such as Power over Ethernet (PoE). This technology requires additional pairs of wires for power, and T568A and T568B do not have enough wire pairs to support this.

Conclusion

T568A and T568B are two standards used in structured cabling systems for connecting Ethernet cables. Each standard has its own advantages and disadvantages that should be taken into account when designing a network. While T568A and T568B provide backward compatibility and allow for different network topologies, they can suffer from signal interference and are not suitable for newer technologies such as PoE. Taking all these factors into consideration, it is important to select the right wiring standard for your given network requirements.
