It also gives you the convenience of turning all outlets on or off with the single flip of one switch instead of having to walk around and turn them all individually. While wiring multiple outlets to one switch can be rather complicated, with the right tools and materials, this project can be completed in surprisingly little time.

What You Will Need

Before getting started with wiring multiple outlets, be sure to have the following supplies on hand:

  • Hot wire (black)

  • Switch

  • White wire

  • Ground wire

  • Screwdriver (Phillips head)

  • Wire stripper

  • Voltage tester

  • Outlet boxes

  • Pliers

  • Electrical tape

Once you are certain that you have all of the necessary supplies and equipment, follow these easy steps to complete the installation:

  1. Turn off the power to the circuit at the breaker box.

  2. Unscrew the cover plate from the existing outlet and remove it.

  3. Attach the black wire from the new outlet to the hot wire, and the white wire to the neutral wire.

  4. Attach the ground wires together and make sure that they are securely connected.

  5. Use an electric current tester to check for continuity.

  6. Attach a short piece of conduit to the back of the new outlet and run it to the switch.

  7. Run the black wire from the hot side of the switch up through the conduit and into the back of the new outlet.

  8. Attach the black wire to the hot side of the switch and the white wire to the neutral side of the switch.

  9. Connect the other end of the white wire to the neutral side of the outlet.

  10. Secure the new outlet to the wall using screws and replace the cover plate.

  11. Turn the power back on and test the switch.

Tips for When Wiring Multiple Outlets to One Switch

When wiring multiple outlets to one switch, keep in mind the following tips:

  • Be sure to use a voltage tester to ensure that all the wires are connected properly and securely.

  • Make sure you do not mix up the hot and neutral wires.

  • Secure all the connections with electrical tape to prevent any potential problems down the line.

  • Have a knowledgeable friend or family member help you if you are not confident in your ability to complete the job safely.
