How to Wire a Light Switch in the UK: A Comprehensive Guide

When it comes to wiring a light switch in the UK, knowledge is key. Whether you’re an amateur DIYer or an experienced electrician, it’s important to get it right. Doing a wiring job in the wrong way can cause electrical disasters, fire hazards and expensive repair bills. Therefore, let’s take a look at how to wire a light switch in the UK, step by step.

Wiring a light switch in the UK may come as a challenge for many. After all, the British UK wiring colour code is different from other countries. Thus, when it comes to connecting the wires, being aware of the wiring colour codes is crucial. It is also important to follow the regulations and wiring diagrams that are outlined in the Electrical Safety First regulations.

What You Need

Before you begin work on wiring a light switch in the UK, make sure you have the following supplies:

  • Light switch

  • Screwdrivers

  • Cable stripper

  • Electrical tape

  • Wirewool

  • Wall box

  • Residual current device (RCD) unit

Without these essential tools, the wiring process will not be successful. So, make sure you have everything ready before getting started.

The Wiring Colour Code

The first step to wiring a light switch in the UK is to become familiar with the wiring colour code. The colour coding for electrical wiring sprang up about 50 years ago with the establishment of the British Standards Institution.

The wiring colour code follows the below convention:

  • Live – Brown (or Red)

  • Neutral – Blue

  • Earth – Green/Yellow

Put simply, the brown/red wire is live, the blue wire is neutral and the green/yellow wire is earth. As you start wiring the switch, ensure you identify which wire is which.

Wiring the Light Switch

Once you’ve identified the colour of the wires, you can then proceed with the wiring process. Make sure to turn off your electricity supply prior to doing this and use the wiring diagram that is supplied with the light switch. If a wiring diagram is not provided, you can refer to the diagram available at the Electrical Safety First website.

Begin the wiring process with the live wire. Firstly, place the plastic wall box into the hole in the wall. Then, strip off the covering from the end of the brown/red wire and connect it to the “L” terminal on the light switch. Secure the connection using an appropriate sized screwdriver.

Next, connect the blue wire to the “N” terminal and secure it. Then, connect the yellow/green wire to the “E” terminal and secure the connection. Once all the connections are made, attach the light switch to the wall box and turn on your electricity supply.

Safety Precautions

When wiring a light switch in the UK, it is important to pay attention to safety precautions. Follow the wiring diagram carefully and if in doubt, contact a professional. Additionally, make sure to fit a residual current device (RCD) unit to the switchboard. This will provide protection against electrocution and reduce the risk of an electrical disaster occurring.

By following the steps above, you can successfully wire a light switch in the UK. Remember, safety should always come first and if you ever feel uncomfortable when wiring, stop and call in a professional.
