What Are the 7 Human Needs?

Humans have an innate need to survive, and that often manifests itself in the form of seven essential needs. From the biological to the psychological, these needs are fundamental to our well-being and must be met in order to be happy and fulfilled. Knowing what they are, and how they differ from one another, can be essential to humans developing a healthy balance in their lives.

The seven human needs are Survival, Structure, Significance, Security, Sexuality, Socialization, and Self-Actualization. These needs drive us to take action, feed our curiosity, and explore our potential. To a certain extent, they motivate us to pursue our dreams and aspirations and make us who we are today.

Survival

In basic terms, survival is the need for food, water, and shelter to maintain life. While it might not be at the front of our minds every day, it is a necessity that has been ingrained in us from our beginnings. Without it, we could not live. Achieving this most basic need requires a certain level of financial security, something that is still out of reach for many people around the world.

Structure

Structure is the second of the seven human needs and is defined as the need for rules, obligations, and expectations. We develop structure when we create and follow routines, or when we join an organization. It gives us a sense of purpose and puts our lives into perspective. Meeting our need for structure also relies heavily on having access to the right resources and money, something that is all too often unattainable.

Significance

Our third need is significance. This is the need to feel important or valuable in some way. We want to know that we matter, that we make a difference and that we are seen and heard. Financial freedom can help provide a sense of significance as it gives us the power to pursue our passions and make a meaningful impact on the world.

Security

Security is the fourth of the seven human needs and is the need for safety and stability. We all have a fundamental desire for protection, whether it be physical or emotional. Having access to enough money to meet our basic needs allows us to feel secure and give us the confidence to pursue both short- and long-term goals.

Sexuality

Sexuality is the fifth human need and is the need to express our sexuality in a healthy, safe, and consensual manner. Money plays a role in fulfilling this need as it can provide us with access to a safe space where we can explore, experiment, and discover all aspects of ourselves.

Socialization

The sixth human need is socialization, which is the need for intimate, meaningful relationships. We all need connection and belonging in order to thrive. Having enough money to invest in quality time with friends and family can make all the difference in meeting this need.

Self-Actualization

Finally, self-actualization is the seventh and highest of all human needs. It is the need to become the person we were born to be and reach our full potential. Meeting this need often requires taking risks and making sacrifices, something that money can help with.

Overall, understanding the different types of human needs and how they relate to finances can help us make informed decisions in our lives and ensure that we are living in accordance with our values. Having enough money to meet our basic needs can help us create the foundation and security necessary to pursue our dreams and reach our highest potential.
