How To Wire Reverse Lights On Tow Mirrors

You have recently purchased tow mirrors for your vehicle, or maybe you have been considering it. Either way, they are a great way to improve the visibility when hauling large loads. But before you start enjoying the extra visibility and convenience, you will need to know how to wire reverse lights on tow mirrors. Wiring tow mirrors with reverse lights is an important step for your safety, as well as for other drivers on the road. In this article, we’ll discuss the different steps and considerations to take when wiring tow mirrors with reverse lights.

The reverse light wiring process may seem intimidating at first, but it really isn’t that hard. The key is to be patient and take your time, especially if you don’t have any prior experience with wiring. Before beginning, it is important to double-check that you have all of the necessary components and tools for the job. These include the correct gauge and type of wire, a power drill or screwdriver, electrical tape, wire cutters, and a set of reverse lights. Additionally, you should read any instructions that come with the tow mirrors before attempting to do any wiring.

Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before you can start wiring, you will need to gather the right tools and materials. Aside from the reverse lights and tow mirrors, you will need a power drill or screwdriver, electrical wire (14-gauge is ideal), wire cutters, and electrical tape. Make sure that you have enough wire to reach from the reverse lights to the power source. A good rule of thumb is to buy at least twice as much wire as you think you will need.

Connecting the Wires to the Reverse Lights

The next step is to connect the wires to the reverse lights. Start by connecting one end of the wire to the reverse lights. Be sure to use the appropriate connectors; different reverse lights may require different types. When you have securely connected the wire to the reverse lights, check to make sure the connection is tight and that no wires are exposed. Next, wrap each connection with electrical tape to ensure that it remains secure over time.

Routing the Wire and Making Connections

Now that the wires are connected to the reverse lights, you can begin routing the wire to the power source. This step will involve running the wire through the frames of the tow mirrors and securing it with screws or adhesives, depending on the type of tow mirrors you have. It is essential to make sure the wire will not be in contact with any moving parts or be exposed to extreme temperatures. This could cause a serious issue.

Once the wire is properly secured to the structure of the tow mirrors, you can begin connecting it to the power source. Depending on your vehicle, the reverse light power source may either be directly off the battery terminals, or off of the fuse box. If the power source is not the battery, be sure to locate the proper fuse and connect the wire accordingly.

Secure and Test the Wiring

The final step is to secure the wiring and test it. Use tie-wraps, cable clamps, or electrical tape to make sure the wire is tightly secured and won't move around. Once you have secured the wiring, turn on the ignition and check that the reverse lights are functioning correctly. If everything appears to be working properly, you can start enjoying the extra visibility and convenience of having tow mirrors with reverse lights.
