Home Electrical Wiring - The Basics

Whether you’re building or remodeling a home, one of the most important aspects is the home electrical wiring. While it can be intimidating for some, understanding the basics of electrical wiring can help you to feel more in control. Home electrical wiring can be divided into two categories: temporary wiring and permanent wiring.

Temporary Wiring

Temporary wiring is used when a house is initially built and is often referred to as “rough-in” wiring. This type of wiring typically includes basic outlets, lights, and switches, and is usually done with non-metallic (NM) cables. NM cables are the most commonly used cables in residential construction, as they’re relatively inexpensive and easy to install. It’s important to note that NM cables are not suitable for all types of circuits, so always check your local codes before starting any wiring project.

Permanent Wiring

Once the home is complete, the homeowner will need to install permanent wiring. This type of wiring adds the finishing touches to the home, such as providing power to larger appliances, like dishwashers, and adding additional outlets. Permanent wiring is installed with metal conduit, which is more durable than NM cables and can better withstand extreme temperatures and moisture. It’s also recommended that all wiring projects should be done by a qualified electrician, as incorrect wiring can be dangerous.

Home Electrical Wiring Costs

The cost of home electrical wiring can vary depending on the job and the materials being used. For example, installing temporary wiring in a new home can cost anywhere from $4,000 to $10,000, while the price for installing permanent wiring can range from $2,000 to $6,000. Expenses can also increase if rewiring is necessary. Additionally, hiring an electrician to complete the job will add to the total cost.

DIY Home Electrical Wiring

Although it’s typically best to hire a professional electrician for any wiring project, some homeowners choose to DIY their own home electrical wiring. If this is the route you decide to take, it’s important to do your research and make sure you understand the process and local codes. You’ll also need to purchase the correct wiring and products, which can be costly. Lastly, it’s crucial to remember safety first and keep in mind that even well-meaning mistakes can cause significant damage.
