Designing Your Backsplash Around Outlets: How To Do It Right

Installing a backsplash in your kitchen is one of the most attractive ways to upgrade the look and feel of your home. But when it comes to installing outlets in that backsplash, the process gets a lot more complicated. You have to take into account the size, shape, and location of the outlet and adjust your design accordingly. This article will guide you through the process of designing your backsplash around outlets – and how to do it right.

Once you’ve decided to install a backsplash, you’ll need to determine what your overall design should be. This is where it’s important to consider the placement of outlets and how they might affect the finished product. If a backsplash is too close to an outlet, it can be difficult to fit the tile pieces in correctly and you risk overloading the outlet by plugging multiple appliances into it.

How To Measure For Outlets During a Backsplash Installation

The first step to installing a backsplash correctly is to measure for outlets. You need to know exactly where any outlets are located in the area you’re tiling and if they’re going to be covered or exposed.

To measure for outlets, use a tape measure and record both the height and the width of each outlet. It’s also important to remember that outlets come in standard sizes so there are no shocking surprises. The size of outlets generally falls into three categories: 15 amps outlets with a width of 2 inches; 20 amps outlets with a width of 2.375 inches; and 30 amps outlets with a width of 3.5 inches.

Choosing How To Place the Outlet in the Backsplash

Once you’ve accurately measured the outlet, you’ll need to decide on the placement of it within the backsplash. There are two main choices when it comes to the placement of an outlet in the backsplash – either exposed or plugged.

Exposed: With an exposed outlet, the outlet will show through the tile and remain visible. Because of this, exposed outlets require careful planning. You’ll need to cut the tiles around the outlet and make sure it is flush with the surface.

Plugged: When an outlet is plugged, it’s completely concealed by the tiles, which makes installation much easier. However, you need to keep in mind that plugged outlets require more clearance than exposed outlets and will take up more space.

Getting the Right Backsplash Pieces to Fit Around Outlets

Once you’ve determined where and how your outlet will be placed, it’s time to choose the right tiles for your backsplash. Depending on the size and shape of your outlet, you may need to find specially cut pieces to fit around it.

If you’re using large format tiles, it's likely that you won’t be able to cut them to fit around the outlet. Instead, you’ll need to get pieces of the same material that are specifically shaped to plug in the space around the outlet. These pieces can be cut to fit the exact shape and size of the outlet, making it easy to get the perfect fit.

Tips For Installing a Backsplash Around Outlets

It’s important to keep a few key tips in mind when installing a backsplash around outlets. Here are some of the most important ones:

  • Measure and mark the outlet before beginning installation.

  • Choose the right type of outlet depending on the amount of wattage you’ll be using.

  • Make sure the tiles are cut correctly to fit around the outlet.

  • Use spacers between the tiles and the outlet for a better fit and improved appearance.

  • Don’t forget to seal the edges around the outlet.

By following these tips and designing your backsplash around outlets, you’ll be able to create a beautiful, timeless look for your kitchen. No matter the size or shape of your outlet, you can create a stunning backsplash that fits perfectly – and looks amazing.
