Ac House Wiring Color Code: Differentiating Between The Various Colors

The use of color in electric wiring can be extremely advantageous when it comes to the safety of a home electric system. Each color of a wire indicates a different purpose, and help differentiate between two wires that could be mixed up or misunderstood. This is why AC house wiring color codes are so important for both homeowners and electricians alike.

These code standards were established by the National Electrical Code (NEC) and are used in both residential and commercial applications. While most of the colors remain the same across all areas of the country, there are slight variations you may encounter based on where you live. Knowing the differences in each of the colors is essential for safely working with your electric system.

Black Wires

Black wires are used as the main power line into the system and are usually the hot line, meaning they are electrically charged. As they are live wires and carrying current through them, they should never be touched without the proper safety equipment.

White Wires

White wires are used as the neutral to complete the circuit; this is the portion of the wiring that is not carrying the electric charge. They are normally returned to ground through the grounding conductor or rod and should also not be touched without appropriate protection.

Red Windings

Red wires are typically used for circuits such as wall outlets and other household uses. They are used to provide the power source for many of the devices in our homes and are commonly installed along with black wires.

Green Wires

Green wires serve as the “ground” and are used to return the current to the earth. They are not connected to the live wire but will keep any current from escaping, should the load become too heavy and cause a surge. These are normally only present in the main panel and in some residential installations.

Yellow and Blue Wires

Yellow and blue wires are sometimes used in place of black and red wires to indicate that these are the secondary lines. This is generally done in commercial buildings and industrial locations, while residential homes tend to stick to the standard black and white wires.

Conclusion

The use of specific colors for electrical wiring is essential for the safety of our electrical system. Knowing the differences between each of the colors and their respective purpose is key to working safely and effectively with the wiring in your home. AC house wiring color codes are the best way to know which wire performs which function in our electrical system.
